School of Performing Arts (SPA)
The School of Indian Music and Dance was set up in April at Beau Bassin. In 1975, it merged with the Mahatma Gandhi Institute at Moka as the School of Indian Music and Fine Arts and in 1983 it was renamed Department of Indian Music and Dance. Eventually, upon the decision of the MGI/RTI Council of August 2006, it became the School of Performing Arts. The School comprises of seven departments.
The School of Performing Arts has now developed into a vibrant and dynamic entity of the Institute, with a broad spectrum of academic programmes in nine disciplines namely; Kathak, Bharata Natyam, Kuchipudi, Vocal Hindustani, Vocal Carnatic, Sitar, Tabla and Mridangam. The School is engaged in the promotion of education and culture through the teaching and learning of Performing Arts at different levels. It also promotes artistic and cultural activities as well as creation and innovation. Throughout the year, the School of Performing Arts puts up programmes for various festivals and other occasions for governmental, non-governmental and socio cultural organisations.
Programmes of Study offered by the SPA include; Children’s course, Certificate Course, Advanced Certificate Course, Certificate of Proficiency in Performance, Diploma, Undergraduate and Post Graduate programmes. The training programmes are conducted by highly trained staff members who are committed Lecturers, Senior Lecturers, Associate Professor, Educators, Performing Artistes and Visiting Scholars. It is also crucial to note that the excitement, power and achievement of great teaching, creative work – research and service come from individual expertise, inspiration, involvement and more importantly from institutional support.
In 2014, the School celebrated its 50th Years of Existence/ Golden Jubilee.

School of Indian Studies (SIS)
The School of Indian Studies which was functioning as the Department of Languages since 1976 was set up in 1998. The School has grown today into one of the most important School of the Institute with more than 30 highly qualified and trained academic staff in the grade of Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor and Professor. The School consists of 7 Departments namely: Department of Hindi Studies, Urdu Studies, Tamil Studies, Telugu Studies, Marathi Studies, Creative Writing and Publications and Language Resource Centre. The Departments have established links with various universities outside Mauritius. Besides teaching at diploma, undergraduate and post-graduate levels, the academic staff members are also involved in research in their respective fields of study. They are also involved in the supervision and evaluation of M.Phil and Ph.D research projects. The School caters for Teacher Training Programmes at both primary and secondary levels in collaboration with MIE and the Ministry of Education and Human Resources, Tertiary Education and Scientific Research.
